[226] Now at that time a certain man whose hands and feet had been cut off was in a family house,¹ surrounded by his relatives. A certain bhikkhu said to those people: "Friends, do you wish for this man's death?" "Yes, venerable sir, we wish it." "Then have him drink buttermilk (takka)." They had him drink that buttermilk. He died. He was afflicted with remorse (kukkucca). … "Bhikkhu, you have committed an offense (āpatti) entailing defeat (pārājika)."
Now at that time a certain man whose hands and feet had been cut off was in a family house, surrounded by his relatives. A certain bhikkhunī said to those people: "Friends, do you wish for this man's death?" "Yes, noble lady, we wish it." "Then have him drink salted sour gruel (loṇasocīraka)."² They had him drink that salted sour gruel. He died. She was afflicted with remorse. Then that bhikkhunī reported this matter to the bhikkhunīs. The bhikkhunīs reported this matter to the bhikkhus. The bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, that bhikkhunī has committed an offense entailing defeat."
The Third Pārājika is concluded.
