[234] **"Then, at a later time"** means: when that moment (khaṇa), that instant (laya), that brief interval (muhutta) in which the utterance was made has passed.
**"Being cross-examined"** means: being cross-examined concerning the matter that was claimed, thus: "What did you attain? How did you attain it? When did you attain it? Where did you attain it? Which defilements did you abandon? Of which dhammas are you the obtainer?"
**"Not being cross-examined"** means: not being addressed by anyone.
**"Having fallen (into the offense)"** means: having evil desires, overcome by desire, having boasted of a superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma) that is non-existent and unreal, he has fallen into an offense of pārājika.
**"Seeking purification"** means: desiring to become a householder, or desiring to become a lay follower (upāsaka), or desiring to become a monastery attendant (ārāmika), or desiring to become a novice (sāmaṇera).
**"Friends, not knowing I said 'I know'; not seeing, 'I see'"** means: "I do not know these dhammas; I do not see these dhammas; these dhammas do not exist in me; and I am not to be found in these dhammas."
**"I spoke emptily, falsely"** means: what was spoken by me was empty; what was spoken by me was false; what was spoken by me was unreal; what was spoken by me was non-existent; it was spoken by me not knowing.¹
**"Except through overestimation"** means: setting aside overestimation (adhimāna).
