[291] Now at that time a certain brahmin, having invited bhikkhus, said this: "Let the honored arahants come." They became anxious with scruple (kukkucca), thinking: "We are not arahants, yet this brahmin addresses us with the designation 'arahants.' How, then, should we proceed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, there is no offense (anāpatti) when it is said out of confidence (pasāda)."
Now at that time a certain brahmin, having invited bhikkhus, said this: "Let the honored arahants sit down." … "Let the honored arahants eat." … "Let the honored arahants be satisfied." … "Let the honored arahants go." They became anxious with scruple, thinking: "We are not arahants, yet this brahmin addresses us with the designation 'arahants.' How, then, should we proceed?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, there is no offense when it is said out of confidence."
