[296] Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends, the lake from which this Tapodā River flows has water that is clear, cool, sweet, and pure; it has smooth banks and is delightful, abounding in fish and turtles, and lotuses the size of chariot wheels bloom there. And yet this Tapodā flows along boiling."
The bhikkhus criticized, deplored, and complained: "How can the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna speak thus: 'Friends, the lake from which this Tapodā River flows has water that is clear, cool, sweet, and pure; it has smooth banks and is delightful, abounding in fish and turtles, and lotuses the size of chariot wheels bloom there. And yet this Tapodā flows along boiling'? The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is laying claim to a superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma)!" They reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Bhikkhus, the lake from which this Tapodā River flows has water that is clear, cool, sweet, and pure; it has smooth banks and is delightful, abounding in fish and turtles, and lotuses the size of chariot wheels bloom there. But, bhikkhus, this Tapodā comes flowing between two great hells (mahāniraya); that is why this Tapodā flows along boiling. Moggallāna spoke the truth, bhikkhus. There is no offence (āpatti) for Moggallāna."
