[297] Now at that time King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha, doing battle with the Licchavis, was crushed. Then afterwards the king, having mustered his army, vanquished the Licchavis. And in the battle the victory drum (nandi) went about: "The Licchavis have been crushed by the king." Then the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna addressed the bhikkhus: "Friends, the king was crushed by the Licchavis, yet in the battle the victory drum goes about: 'The Licchavis have been crushed by the king.'" The bhikkhus complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna say thus: 'Friends, the king was crushed by the Licchavis, yet in the battle the victory drum goes about: "The Licchavis have been crushed by the king"'? The Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is laying claim to a superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma)." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, first the king was crushed by the Licchavis; then afterwards the king, having mustered his army, vanquished the Licchavis. Bhikkhus, Moggallāna spoke the truth. There is no offense (āpatti), bhikkhus, for Moggallāna."
