[300] Venerable sirs, the four matters entailing defeat (pārājikā dhammā) have been recited. A bhikkhu who has fallen into any one or another of them does not obtain communion (saṃvāsa) together with the bhikkhus; as before, so afterwards, he is one defeated (pārājika), not in communion. Concerning this I ask the venerable ones: Are you pure in this matter? A second time I ask: Are you pure in this matter? A third time I ask: Are you pure in this matter? The venerable ones are pure in this matter; therefore they are silent. Thus do I hold this to be so.
The Chapter on Defeat (Pārājikakaṇḍa) is concluded.
