[302] Now at that time, bhikkhus, having eaten fine foods, fell asleep with muddled mindfulness, not clearly comprehending (asampajāna). As they fell asleep with muddled mindfulness, not clearly comprehending, semen was emitted in a dream. Remorse arose in them: "The Blessed One has laid down a training rule (sikkhāpada): 'Intentional emission of semen is a saṅghādisesa.' And our semen was emitted in a dream, and intention is indeed found therein. Could it be that we have committed an offense entailing saṅghādisesa?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. [He said:] "Bhikkhus, that intention exists, but it is not legally reckonable (abbohārika)."
Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin, with reference to that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule: 'Intentional emission of semen, except in a dream, is a saṅghādisesa.'"
