[32] And how, bhikkhus, is the training (sikkhā) not renounced?
Here, bhikkhus, by whatever modes, by whatever characteristics, by whatever signs the training is renounced by a bhikkhu¹ — if a madman renounces the training by those modes, by those characteristics, by those signs, the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the presence of a madman: the training is not renounced.
One whose mind is deranged renounces the training: the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the presence of one whose mind is deranged: the training is not renounced.
One racked by feeling (vedanā) renounces the training: the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the presence of one racked by feeling: the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the presence of a deity (devatā): the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the presence of an animal: the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the Ariyaka language in the presence of a Milakkha; if he does not understand, the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the Milakkha language in the presence of an Ariyaka; if he does not understand, the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the Ariyaka language in the presence of an Ariyaka; if he does not understand, the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in the Milakkha language in the presence of a Milakkha; if he does not understand, the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training in jest: the training is not renounced.
He renounces the training as a heedless blurt: the training is not renounced.
Not wishing to make it heard, he makes it heard: the training is not renounced.
Wishing to make it heard, he does not make it heard: the training is not renounced.
He makes it heard to one who does not understand: the training is not renounced.
He does not make it heard to one who understands: the training is not renounced.
Or else he does not make it heard at all: the training is not renounced.
Thus indeed, bhikkhus, the training is not renounced.
