[31] And how, Bhikkhus, is there both a disclosure of weakness (dubbalyāvikamma) and a disavowal of the training (sikkhā paccakkhātā)? Here, Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, discontented, dissatisfied, desiring to fall away from the ascetic life, distressed by, ashamed of, and disgusted with the state of a bhikkhu, longing for the state of a householder … longing for the state of one who is not a son of the Sakyan, says and makes known: "I disavow the Buddha." Thus too, Bhikkhus, there is both a disclosure of weakness and the training is disavowed.
Or else, discontented, dissatisfied, desiring to fall away from the ascetic life, distressed by, ashamed of, and disgusted with the state of a bhikkhu, longing for the state of a householder … longing for the state of one who is not a son of the Sakyan, he says and makes known: "I disavow the Dhamma." He says and makes known: "I disavow the Saṅgha." He says and makes known: "I disavow the training (sikkhā)." He says and makes known: "I disavow the discipline (vinaya)." He says and makes known: "I disavow the Pātimokkha." He says and makes known: "I disavow the recitation (uddesa)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my preceptor (upajjhāya)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my teacher (ācariya)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my co-resident pupil (saddhivihārika)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my pupil (antevāsika)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my fellow of the same preceptor (samānupajjhāyaka)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my fellow of the same teacher (samānācariyaka)." He says and makes known: "I disavow my fellow in the holy life (sabrahmacārī)." … He says and makes known: "Remember me as a householder (gihī)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as a monastery attendant (ārāmika)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as a novice (sāmaṇera)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as a member of another sect (titthiya)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as a disciple of another sect (titthiyasāvaka)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as one who is not an ascetic (assamaṇa)." He says and makes known: "Remember me as one who is not a son of the Sakyan (asakyaputtiya)." Thus too, Bhikkhus, there is both a disclosure of weakness and the training is disavowed.
Or else, discontented, dissatisfied, desiring to fall away from the ascetic life, distressed by, ashamed of, and disgusted with the state of a bhikkhu, longing for the state of a householder … longing for the state of one who is not a son of the Sakyan, he says and makes known: "Enough for me with the Buddha!" … He says and makes known: "Enough for me with my fellows in the holy life!" Thus too, Bhikkhus, … Or else, … he says and makes known: "What is the Buddha to me?" … He says and makes known: "What are my fellows in the holy life to me?" Thus too, … Or else, … he says and makes known: "I have no need of the Buddha." … He says and makes known: "I have no need of my fellows in the holy life." Thus too, … Or else, … he says and makes known: "I am well freed from the Buddha." … He says and makes known: "I am well freed from my fellows in the holy life." Thus too, Bhikkhus, there is both a disclosure of weakness and the training is disavowed.
Or again, whatever other synonyms (vevacana) there may be for the Buddha, or synonyms for the Dhamma, or synonyms for the Saṅgha, or synonyms for the training, or synonyms for the discipline, or synonyms for the Pātimokkha, or synonyms for the recitation, or synonyms for a preceptor, or synonyms for a teacher, or synonyms for a co-resident pupil, or synonyms for a pupil, or synonyms for a fellow of the same preceptor, or synonyms for a fellow of the same teacher, or synonyms for a fellow in the holy life, or synonyms for a householder, or synonyms for a lay follower, or synonyms for a monastery attendant, or synonyms for a novice, or synonyms for a member of another sect, or synonyms for a disciple of another sect, or synonyms for one who is not an ascetic, or synonyms for one who is not a son of the Sakyan — he says and makes known by those modes, by those characteristics, by those signs. Thus too, Bhikkhus, there is both a disclosure of weakness and the training is disavowed.
