[399] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the Venerable Udāyi was dwelling in the forest. And at that time many women came to the park, wishing to see the dwelling. Then those women approached the Venerable Udāyi, and having approached, they said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "Venerable sir, we wish to see the master's dwelling."
Then the Venerable Udāyi, having shown those women the dwelling, referring to those women's anal passage and urinary passage, spoke in praise and spoke in dispraise, begged and implored, asked and asked in return, explained and instructed, and reviled. Those women who were bold, wanton, and shameless laughed together with the Venerable Udāyi, bantered with him, guffawed, and jested. But those women who possessed a sense of shame, having departed, complained to the bhikkhus: "Venerable sirs, this is not seemly, not proper. Even if we were spoken to in this way by a husband we would not wish it — how much less by master Udāyi!"
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes, contented, conscientious, scrupulous, and desirous of the training took offense, criticized, and spread it about: "How indeed can the Venerable Udāyi address womankind with lewd words?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, on that ground, on that occasion, having had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus convened, questioned the Venerable Udāyi: "Is it true, Udāyi, as they say, that you address womankind with lewd words?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "It is unbefitting, foolish man, not in conformity, not proper, unworthy of an ascetic, not allowable, not to be done. How indeed can you, foolish man, address womankind with lewd words? Has not the Dhamma been taught by me in many ways for the sake of dispassion, not for passion … the allaying of the fevers of sensual pleasures has been declared? This, foolish man, is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu, overcome, with a mind (citta) perverted [by lust], should address womankind with lewd words, in the manner of a young man to a young woman, with words connected with sexual intercourse, commits a Saṅghādisesa."
