[542] Then the Blessed One, having given a Dhamma talk with reference to that incident and that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha appoint Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings (senāsanapaññāpaka) and designator of meals (bhattuddesaka). And thus, bhikkhus, should he be appointed: First, Dabba should be asked. Having asked him, a competent and capable bhikkhu should inform the Saṅgha:
'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, let the Saṅgha appoint the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings and designator of meals. This is the motion (ñatti).
'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. The Saṅgha appoints the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings and designator of meals. Any venerable one to whom the appointment of the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings and designator of meals is agreeable should remain silent; anyone to whom it is not agreeable should speak.
'The Venerable Dabba Mallaputta has been appointed by the Saṅgha as assigner of lodgings and designator of meals. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus I hold it.'"
