[594] Now at that time the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka (Mettiyabhummajakā bhikkhū) were newly ordained and of little merit. Whatever inferior lodgings belonged to the Saṅgha fell to their lot, and inferior meals likewise. Now at that time the people in Rājagaha wished to give to the elder bhikkhus specially prepared (abhisaṅkhārika) food — ghee, oil, and choice relishes (uttaribhaṅga) — but to the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka they gave ordinary fare, whatever came to hand: broken-rice gruel (kāṇājaka) with sour gruel as its accompaniment (bilaṅgadutiya).
After the meal, when they had returned from alms-round, they asked the elder bhikkhus: "Friends, what was there for you in the refectory? What was there not for you?" Some elders spoke thus: "Friends, there was ghee for us, there was oil, there were choice relishes." But the bhikkhus Mettiya and Bhummajaka spoke thus: "Friends, there was nothing at all for us — only ordinary fare, whatever came to hand: broken-rice gruel with sour gruel as its accompaniment."
