[590] A bhikkhu is seen committing a grave offense (thullaccaya). One holds the view that the grave offense is a grave offense … one holds the view that the grave offense is a pācittiya … one holds the view that the grave offense is a pāṭidesanīya … one holds the view that the grave offense is a dukkaṭa … one holds the view that the grave offense is a dubbhāsita … one holds the view that the grave offense is a saṅghādisesa. If he has him charged with a pārājika, saying, "You are not an ascetic … or an act of the Saṅgha (saṅghakamma)" — thus too the legal issue belongs to a different class of offense (āpattaññabhāgiya), and a mere pretext (lesa) has been seized upon: there is an offense of saṅghādisesa for each and every utterance.
