[150] When the Blessed One had attained final Nibbāna (parinibbute Bhagavati), of the bhikkhus there, those bhikkhus who were not yet free from lust (avītarāgā) — some, stretching forth their arms, wept; they fell down as though their feet were cut off; they rolled back and forth, crying: "Too quickly has the Blessed One attained final Nibbāna! Too quickly has the Sublime One (Sugata) attained final Nibbāna! Too quickly has the One with Vision vanished from the world!"
But those bhikkhus who were free from lust endured it, possessed of mindfulness and clear comprehension, reflecting: "Impermanent indeed are conditioned things (saṅkhārā); how could it be otherwise here?"
