[167] Furthermore, Ānanda, the jewel-treasure appeared to King Mahāsudassana — a beryl gem, beautiful, of genuine quality (jātimā), eight-faceted, well cut, clear, limpid, endowed with every excellent quality. And the radiance of that jewel-treasure, Ānanda, pervaded all around for the distance of a league. It happened once, Ānanda, that King Mahāsudassana, wishing to test that very jewel-treasure, had his fourfold army arrayed in armor, hoisted the jewel to the top of his banner, and set forth in the pitch darkness of the night. And, Ānanda, the people of all the villages round about set about their work by its light, thinking it was day. Such, Ānanda, was the jewel-treasure that appeared to King Mahāsudassana.
