[182] Now at that time, Ānanda, the eighty-four thousand elephants of King Mahāsudassana came to attend upon him in the evening and in the morning. Then, Ānanda, this thought occurred to King Mahāsudassana: "These eighty-four thousand elephants of mine come to attend upon me evening and morning. What if, at the passing of each century, forty-two thousand elephants were to come to attend, each once in turn?" Then, Ānanda, King Mahāsudassana addressed the commander-treasure (pariṇāyakaratana): "Dear commander-treasure, these eighty-four thousand elephants of mine come to attend upon me evening and morning. Well then, dear commander-treasure, at the passing of each century let forty-two thousand elephants come to attend, each once in turn." "So be it, sire," Ānanda, the commander-treasure replied in assent to King Mahāsudassana.
Then, Ānanda, at a later time, the elephants came to attend upon King Mahāsudassana forty-two thousand at a time, each once in turn, at the passing of each century. Then, Ānanda, when many years, many hundreds of years, many thousands of years had passed, this thought occurred to Queen Subhaddā: "It is long since I have seen King Mahāsudassana. What if I were to go to see King Mahāsudassana?" Then, Ānanda, Queen Subhaddā addressed the women of the harem: "Here, bathe your heads and put on yellow garments. It is long since we have seen King Mahāsudassana; let us go to see King Mahāsudassana." "So be it, my lady," Ānanda, the women of the harem replied in assent to Queen Subhaddā; and having bathed their heads and put on yellow garments, they approached Queen Subhaddā. Then, Ānanda, Queen Subhaddā addressed the commander-treasure: "Dear commander-treasure, make ready the fourfold army. It is long since we have seen King Mahāsudassana; let us go to see King Mahāsudassana." "So be it, my queen," Ānanda, the commander-treasure replied in assent to Queen Subhaddā; and having had the fourfold army made ready, he informed Queen Subhaddā: "The fourfold army has been made ready for you, my queen; now do what you think it is time for."
Then, Ānanda, Queen Subhaddā, together with the fourfold army and the women of the harem, went to the Palace of Dhamma; and having ascended the Palace of Dhamma, she went to the Great Array gabled chamber, and having approached, she stood leaning against the door-post of the Great Array gabled chamber. Then, Ānanda, King Mahāsudassana, hearing the sound, thought: "What now is that? It is like the sound of a great body of people." Coming out of the Great Array gabled chamber, he saw Queen Subhaddā standing leaning against the door-post; and seeing her, he said to Queen Subhaddā: "Stay right there, my queen; do not enter." Then, Ānanda, King Mahāsudassana addressed a certain man: "Come, my good man, bring the couch made of gold out from the Great Array gabled chamber and set it up in the palm grove made entirely of gold." "So be it, sire," Ānanda, that man replied in assent to King Mahāsudassana; and bringing the couch made of gold out from the Great Array gabled chamber, he set it up in the palm grove made entirely of gold.
Then, Ānanda, King Mahāsudassana lay down in the lion's posture on his right side, placing one foot upon the other, mindful (sata) and clearly comprehending (sampajāna).
