[187] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Nādika, in the Brick House (Giñjakāvasatha). Now at that time the Blessed One was declaring, concerning devotees (paricārakā) in the surrounding countries who had passed away and died, their places of rebirth — among the Kāsis and Kosalas, the Vajjis and Mallas, the Cetis and Vaṃsas, the Kurus and Pañcālas, the Macchas and Sūrasenas — saying: "So-and-so was reborn in such-and-such a place; so-and-so was reborn in such-and-such a place. More than fifty devotees of Nādika who have passed away and died, through the destruction of the five lower fetters (orambhāgiyāni saṃyojanāni), are spontaneously reborn (opapātika) and will attain final Nibbāna there, not subject to returning from that world. Over ninety devotees of Nādika who have passed away and died, through the destruction of three fetters and the attenuation of lust (rāga), hatred, and delusion, are once-returners (sakadāgāmī); having come back to this world only once, they will make an end of suffering (dukkha). More than five hundred devotees of Nādika who have passed away and died, through the destruction of three fetters, are stream-enterers (sotāpanna), not subject to falling into states of woe, fixed in destiny, with awakening as their destination."
