[188] The devotees (paricārakā) of Nādika heard: "It is said that the Blessed One declares, concerning devotees in the surrounding countries who have passed on and died — among the Kāsis and Kosalans, the Vajjis and Mallas, the Cetis and Vaṃsas, the Kurus and Pañcālas, the Macchas and Sūrasenas — their rebirths, saying: 'So-and-so has been reborn in such-and-such a place; so-and-so has been reborn in such-and-such a place. More than fifty devotees of Nādika who have passed on and died, with the utter destruction of the five lower fetters (saṃyojana), are spontaneously reborn (opapātikā), there to attain final Nibbāna, not subject to returning from that world. More than ninety devotees of Nādika who have passed on and died, with the utter destruction of three fetters and the attenuation of lust (rāga), hatred, and delusion, are once-returners (sakadāgāmī) who, having come back to this world only once, will make an end of suffering (dukkha). More than five hundred devotees of Nādika who have passed on and died, with the utter destruction of three fetters, are stream-enterers (sotāpannā), not subject to falling into states of woe, assured, destined for awakening.'" And on that account the devotees of Nādika were pleased, gladdened, and filled with rapture (pīti) and joy, having heard the Blessed One's answering of these questions.
