[191] Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the Blessed One appears serene; the Blessed One's countenance fairly shines, owing to the clarity of his faculties. Surely, venerable sir, the Blessed One has today dwelt in a peaceful abiding."
"Ānanda, as soon as you — having made a suggestive discourse in my presence concerning the Magadhan devotees (paricārakā) — rose from your seat and departed, at that very time I, having walked for alms in Nādika, after the meal, returning from almsround, washed my feet, entered the Brick House, and, concerning the Magadhan devotees, made the matter my object, attended to it, and concentrated upon it with my whole mind, and sat down on the seat prepared, thinking: 'I shall know their destiny (gati), their future state — what destiny those worthy ones have, what future state.' Ānanda, I saw the Magadhan devotees — what destiny those worthy ones have, what future state.
"Then, Ānanda, an invisible spirit (yakkha) made a sound heard: 'I am Janavasabha, O Blessed One! I am Janavasabha, O Sublime One (Sugata)!' Ānanda, do you recall having heard, before now, such a name as this, namely 'Janavasabha'?"
"Venerable sir, I do not recall having heard, before now, such a name as this, namely 'Janavasabha.' Moreover, venerable sir, my hair stood on end upon hearing the name 'Janavasabha.' It occurred to me, venerable sir: 'Surely he will be no inferior spirit, for whom such a name as this is well designated, namely "Janavasabha."'"
"Ānanda, following upon the appearance of the sound, a spirit of magnificent appearance appeared before me. And a second time he made a sound heard: 'I am Bimbisāra, O Blessed One! I am Bimbisāra, O Sublime One! This, venerable sir, is the seventh time that I am reborn into the companionship of the Great King Vessavaṇa. Passing away from here, I am able to become a king among human beings.'"
