[200] Then, venerable sir, the Brahmā Sanaṅkumāra gathered himself into a single form; and having gathered himself into a single form, he sat down upon the couch of Sakka, lord of the devas, and addressed the Tāvatiṃsa devas: "What do the good Tāvatiṃsa devas think of this? How well made known by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, are these four bases of psychic power (iddhipāda) — for the making abundant of psychic power (iddhi), for the cultivation of psychic power, for the transformation of psychic power! What four? Here, sirs, a bhikkhu develops the base of psychic power endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to zeal (chanda) and volitional formations of striving (padhānasaṅkhāra); he develops the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to energy and volitional formations of striving; he develops the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to mind (citta) and volitional formations of striving; he develops the base of psychic power endowed with concentration due to investigation (vīmaṃsā) and volitional formations of striving. These, sirs, are the four bases of psychic power made known by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, for the making abundant of psychic power, for the cultivation of psychic power, for the transformation of psychic power.
Whatever ascetics or brahmins, sirs, in the past experienced the many kinds of psychic power, all of them did so through having developed and made much of these same four bases of psychic power. Whatever ascetics or brahmins, sirs, in the future will experience the many kinds of psychic power, all of them will do so through having developed and made much of these same four bases of psychic power. Whatever ascetics or brahmins, sirs, at present experience the many kinds of psychic power, all of them do so through having developed and made much of these same four bases of psychic power.
Do the good Tāvatiṃsa devas see in me too such might of psychic power as this?"
"It is so, Great Brahmā."
"I too, sirs, have become of such great psychic power, of such great might, through having developed and made much of these same four bases of psychic power."
