[245] The gods of Water (āpo) and of Earth (pathavī),
of Fire (tejo) and of Wind (vāyo) then came there;
the Varuṇa gods and the Vāruṇas,
and Soma together with Yasa;
and the glorious gods came
of the hosts of loving-kindness (mettā) and of compassion (karuṇā).
These ten hosts of gods, in ten groups,
all of diverse hue —
possessed of psychic power, radiant,
beautiful and glorious —
rejoicing, they came forth
to the wood, to the assembly of the bhikkhus.
The Veṇḍu gods and the Sahalīs,
the Asamas and the twin Yamas;
the gods who dwell dependent on the Moon came,
with the Moon at their head;
the gods who dwell dependent on the Sun came,
with the Sun at their head;
with the constellations placed before them
came the Mandavalāhakas;
and Vāsava, the foremost of the Vasus,
came too — Sakka, Purindada.
These ten hosts of gods, in ten groups,
all of diverse hue —
possessed of psychic power, radiant,
beautiful and glorious —
rejoicing, they came forth
to the wood, to the assembly of the bhikkhus.
Then came the Sahabhū gods,
blazing like a crest of flame;
the Ariṭṭhakas and the Rojas,
gleaming like flax-blue (ummā) flowers;
the Varuṇas and the Sahadhammas,
the Accutas and the Anejakas;
the Sūleyyas and the Ruciras came,
and the Vāsavanesīs came.
These ten hosts of gods, in ten groups,
all of diverse hue —
possessed of psychic power, radiant,
beautiful and glorious —
rejoicing, they came forth
to the wood, to the assembly of the bhikkhus.
The Samānas, the Mahāsamānas,
the Mānusas, the Mānusuttamas,
the Khiḍḍāpadūsikas came,
and the Manopadūsikas came;
then came the Hari gods,
and those who are the Lohitavāsīs;
the Pāragas and the Mahāpāragas,
glorious gods, came.
These ten hosts of gods, in ten groups,
all of diverse hue —
possessed of psychic power, radiant,
beautiful and glorious —
rejoicing, they came forth
to the wood, to the assembly of the bhikkhus.
The Sukkas, the Karumhas, and the Aruṇas
came together with the Veghanasas;
the Odātagayhas came at their head,
and the Vicakkhaṇa gods came;
the Sadāmattas, the Hāragajas,
and the Missakas, the glorious;
thundering, Pajjunna came,
he who rains down upon the quarters.
These ten hosts of gods, in ten groups,
all of diverse hue —
possessed of psychic power, radiant,
beautiful and glorious —
rejoicing, they came forth
to the wood, to the assembly of the bhikkhus.
The Khemiyas, the Tusitas, the Yāmas,
and the Kaṭṭhakas, the glorious;
the Lambitakas, the Lāmaseṭṭhas,
the gods named Joti, and the Āsavas;
the Nimmānaratis came,
and then came the Paranimmitas.
These ten hosts of gods, in ten groups,
all of diverse hue —
possessed of psychic power, radiant,
beautiful and glorious —
rejoicing, they came forth
to the wood, to the assembly of the bhikkhus.
These sixty hosts of gods,
all of diverse hue,
came according to the order of their names,
and others besides, of like kind, together with them, [thinking:]
"We shall see the Nāga who has put birth behind him,
rid of the stake [of defilement], who has crossed the flood, without taints (āsava) —
the Nāga, the crosser of the flood,
like the moon passed beyond the dark."
