[244] They who seize the nāga kings by force —
divine, twice-born, winged, of purified vision —
came through the air to the midst of the wood:
'Citrā Supaṇṇā' (the many-hued supaṇṇas) is their name.
Then there was safety for the nāga kings;
the Buddha made them secure from the supaṇṇas.
Addressing one another with gentle words,
the nāgas and supaṇṇas took the Buddha as their refuge.
Defeated by Vajirahattha, the asuras dwell in the ocean —
brothers of Vāsava, possessed of psychic power, glorious.
The Kālakañjas, greatly terrifying, the Dānaveghasa asuras,
Vepacitti and Sucitti, and Pahārāda together with Namucī;
and the hundred sons of Bali, all bearing the name Verocana,
having armed their mighty army, approached Rāhu the Auspicious:
'Now, venerable sir, is the time — to the assembly of bhikkhus in the wood.'
