[28] [1] Bhikkhus, when Prince Vipassī was born, they announced it to King Bandhumā: 'Sire, a son is born to you; let your majesty behold him.' Bhikkhus, King Bandhumā beheld Prince Vipassī, and having seen him, had the brahmin soothsayers summoned and said this: 'Let the honorable brahmin soothsayers examine the prince.' Bhikkhus, the brahmin soothsayers saw Prince Vipassī, and having seen him, said this to King Bandhumā:
'Be glad, sire! A son of great might has arisen to you. It is a gain for you, great king; it is well gained by you, great king, in whose family such a son has arisen. For this prince, sire, is endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great man (mahāpurisalakkhaṇa); for a great man endowed with these there are only two destinies, and no other: if he dwells in the house, he becomes a king, a wheel-turning monarch (cakkavatti), righteous, a king of righteousness, a conqueror whose dominion extends to the four quarters, who has attained stability in the realm, endowed with the seven treasures. These seven treasures are his, namely: the wheel-treasure, the elephant-treasure, the horse-treasure, the jewel-treasure, the woman-treasure, the householder-treasure, and the counselor-treasure as the seventh. He has more than a thousand sons, valiant, of heroic form, crushers of the armies of his foes. Having conquered this earth bounded by the ocean — without rod, without sword, by righteousness — he dwells over it. But if he goes forth from the household life into homelessness, he becomes an Arahant, a Fully Awakened One (sammāsambuddha), one who has drawn back the veil in the world.
'And with which thirty-two marks of a great man, sire, is this prince endowed — for a great man endowed with which there are only two destinies, and no other: if he dwells in the house, he becomes a king, a wheel-turning monarch, righteous, a king of righteousness, a conqueror whose dominion extends to the four quarters, who has attained stability in the realm, endowed with the seven treasures; these seven treasures are his, namely: the wheel-treasure … having conquered, he dwells over it; but if he goes forth from the household life into homelessness, he becomes an Arahant, a Fully Awakened One, one who has drawn back the veil in the world?'
