Suttapiṭaka · Dīghanikāya · Mahāvagga · Vol. 10 · Section 300

[300] Bhikkhus, whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) in this way for seven years — for him one of two fruits may be expected: final knowledge (aññā) in this very life, or, if there is a residue of clinging remaining (upādisesa), the state of non-return (anāgāmitā). Let alone seven years, bhikkhus. Whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way for six years … five years … four years … three years … two years … one year … Let alone one year, bhikkhus. Whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way for seven months — for him one of two fruits may be expected: final knowledge in this very life, or, if there is a residue of clinging remaining, the state of non-return. Let alone seven months, bhikkhus. Whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way for six months … five months … four months … three months … two months … one month … half a month … Let alone half a month, bhikkhus. Whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way for seven days — for him one of two fruits may be expected: final knowledge in this very life, or, if there is a residue of clinging remaining, the state of non-return. Bhikkhus, this is the one-way path (ekāyana) for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the passing away of suffering (dukkha) and grief, for the attainment of the true way (ñāya), for the realization of Nibbāna — namely, the four establishments of mindfulness. Thus, what was said was said in dependence on this. Thus spoke the Blessed One. Elated, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One's utterance. The Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta, the ninth, is finished. ____________________ [Variant notes in the Siam Raṭṭha edition: 1. Burmese ed.: aḍḍhamāsaṃ. 2.
