[151] Bhikkhus, whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) in this way for seven years, for him one of two fruits may be expected: final knowledge (aññā) in this very life, or, if there is a residue of clinging (upādisesa) remaining, the state of non-returning (anāgāmitā). Let alone seven years, bhikkhus. Whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way for six years, five years, four years, three years, two years, one year … Let alone one year, bhikkhus. Whoever should develop these four establishments of mindfulness in this way for seven months, for him one of two fruits may be expected: final knowledge in this very life, or, if there is a residue of clinging remaining, the state of non-returning.
