[152] "'Bhikkhus, this path is the one-way path (ekāyana) for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of suffering (dukkha) and grief, for the attainment of the true way (ñāya), for the realization of Nibbāna — namely, the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna).' Thus, what was so said, it was with reference to this that it was said."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Delighted, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.
The Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, the tenth, is concluded.
The Mūlapariyāya Vagga, the first, [is concluded].
Its summary verse (uddāna):
Hear the manifold [teaching]: unaging, undying, attaining to the deathless, pointing out fruit and path, dispelling suffering,
of coherent meaning, of great worth, bringing abundant rapture;
like a reservoir well filled upon a sun-scorched road — Nibbāna [quenching what is] fused with the threefold fire;
dispelling disease and its arisings(?), the excellent Middle Discourses have been set down,
of taste honey-soft and mild, generating play and delight for the immortals;
that [delighting the] assembly of humans, together with the exposition of the discourses, they have been set down for the delight of the sons of the Sakyan(?);
fifty-three excellent ones, a hundred and fifty, two expositions, and those others besides(?);
in the incomparable first chapter, in due order, with unified mind, attend to [this] exalted [teaching](?):
The Mūla[pariyāya], the [Sabb]āsava, the Dhammadāyāda,
the [Bhaya]bherava, the [A]naṅgaṇa, and the [Ā]kaṅkh[eyya] Suttas,
the Vattha[ūpama], the Sallekha, the [Sammā]diṭṭhi, and the Sati[paṭṭhāna] —
that excellent first chapter is completed.
