[322] "Even though the worthy Kassapa says this, still I am not able to relinquish this evil view (pāpakaṃ diṭṭhigataṃ). King Pasenadi of Kosala knows me, and so do foreign kings: 'The chieftain (rājañña) Pāyāsi holds this doctrine, holds this view: "There is no other world; there are no spontaneously reborn beings (opapātika); there is no fruit or result of deeds well done or ill done."' If, worthy Kassapa, I relinquish this evil view, there will be those who will say of me: 'How foolish is the chieftain Pāyāsi, how incompetent, a grasper of what is wrongly grasped!' I shall carry it on out of anger; I shall carry it on out of denigration (makkha); I shall carry it on out of spite (paḷāsa)."
