[39] Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there aging-and-death? With what as condition is there aging-and-death?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention (yoniso manasikāra) there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When birth (jāti) exists, aging-and-death comes to be; with birth as condition there is aging-and-death.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there birth? With what as condition is there birth?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When existence (bhava) exists, birth comes to be; with existence as condition there is birth.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there existence? With what as condition is there existence?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When clinging (upādāna) exists, existence comes to be; with clinging as condition there is existence.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there clinging? With what as condition is there clinging?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When craving (taṇhā) exists, clinging comes to be; with craving as condition there is clinging.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there craving? With what as condition is there craving?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When feeling (vedanā) exists, craving comes to be; with feeling as condition there is craving.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there feeling? With what as condition is there feeling?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When contact (phassa) exists, feeling comes to be; with contact as condition there is feeling.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there contact? With what as condition is there contact?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) exist, contact comes to be; with the six sense bases as condition there is contact.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists are there the six sense bases? With what as condition are there the six sense bases?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When name-and-form (nāmarūpa) exists, the six sense bases come to be; with name-and-form as condition there are the six sense bases.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there name-and-form? With what as condition is there name-and-form?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When consciousness (viññāṇa) exists, name-and-form comes to be; with consciousness as condition there is name-and-form.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'When what exists is there consciousness? With what as condition is there consciousness?' Then, bhikkhus, through wise attention there occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī the breakthrough by wisdom: 'When name-and-form exists, consciousness comes to be; with name-and-form as condition there is consciousness.' Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: 'This consciousness turns back from name-and-form; it does not go beyond. It is just to this extent that one may be born, or age, or die, or pass away, or reappear — that is: with name-and-form as condition, consciousness; with consciousness as condition, name-and-form; with name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases; with the six sense bases as condition, contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging; with clinging as condition, existence; with existence as condition, birth; with birth as condition, aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this entire mass of suffering (dukkha).' 'Origin, origin' — thus, bhikkhus, in regard to things unheard before, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī vision, there arose knowledge (ñāṇa), there arose wisdom, there arose true knowledge, there arose light.
