[23] Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta (bodhisatta) Vipassī: "When what exists is there aging-and-death? With what as condition is there aging-and-death?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention (yoniso manasikāra), there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom (paññāya abhisamayo): "When birth (jāti) exists, there is aging-and-death; with birth as condition there is aging-and-death."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there birth? With what as condition is there birth?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When existence (bhava) exists, there is birth; with existence as condition there is birth."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there existence? With what as condition is there existence?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When clinging (upādāna) exists, there is existence; with clinging as condition there is existence."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there clinging? With what as condition is there clinging?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When craving (taṇhā) exists, there is clinging; with craving as condition there is clinging."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there craving? With what as condition is there craving?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When feeling (vedanā) exists, there is craving; with feeling as condition there is craving."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there feeling? With what as condition is there feeling?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When contact (phassa) exists, there is feeling; with contact as condition there is feeling."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there contact? With what as condition is there contact?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) exist, there is contact; with the six sense bases as condition there is contact."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists are there the six sense bases? With what as condition are there the six sense bases?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When name-and-form (nāmarūpa) exists, there are the six sense bases; with name-and-form as condition there are the six sense bases."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there name-and-form? With what as condition is there name-and-form?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When consciousness (viññāṇa) exists, there is name-and-form; with consciousness as condition there is name-and-form."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists is there consciousness? With what as condition is there consciousness?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When volitional formations (saṅkhārā) exist, there is consciousness; with volitional formations as condition there is consciousness."
Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Bodhisatta Vipassī: "When what exists are there volitional formations? With what as condition are there volitional formations?" Then, bhikkhus, through careful attention, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī a breakthrough by wisdom: "When ignorance (avijjā) exists, there are volitional formations; with ignorance as condition there are volitional formations."
Thus, with ignorance as condition, volitional formations; with volitional formations as condition, consciousness … Such is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
"Origin, origin!" — thus, bhikkhus, in regard to dhammas unheard before, there arose in the Bodhisatta Vipassī vision, there arose knowledge (ñāṇa), there arose wisdom, there arose true knowledge (vijjā), there arose light.
