[22] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. ... "Bhikkhus, before his awakening, while he was still an unawakened bodhisatta, this thought occurred to Vipassī, the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One: 'Alas, this world has fallen into trouble: it is born, and it ages, and it dies, and it passes away, and it is reborn; and yet it does not understand the escape from this suffering (dukkha), that is, from aging and death (jarāmaraṇa). When indeed will the escape from this suffering, from aging and death, be discerned?'"
