[53] Now at that time there were 84,000 monastic residences in Jambudīpa. When one year had elapsed, the deities raised the cry: 'Good sirs, one year has elapsed; five years now remain. When five years have passed, you must approach the royal capital Bandhumatī for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.'
When two years had elapsed, the deities raised the cry: 'Good sirs, two years have elapsed; four years now remain. When four years have passed, you must approach the royal capital Bandhumatī for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.' When three years had elapsed, the deities raised the cry: 'Good sirs, three years have elapsed; three years now remain. When three years have passed, you must approach the royal capital Bandhumatī for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.' When four years had elapsed, the deities raised the cry: 'Good sirs, four years have elapsed; two years now remain. When two years have passed, you must approach the royal capital Bandhumatī for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.' When five years had elapsed, the deities raised the cry: 'Good sirs, five years have elapsed; one year now remains. When one year has passed, you must approach the royal capital Bandhumatī for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.' When six years had elapsed, the deities raised the cry: 'Good sirs, six years have elapsed; now is the time. You must approach the royal capital Bandhumatī for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.'
Then, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus—some by their own psychic power (iddhānubhāva), some by the psychic power of the deities—approached the royal capital Bandhumatī in that very single day, for the recitation of the Pātimokkha.
