Suttapiṭaka · Dīghanikāya · Mahāvagga · Vol. 10 · Section 54

[54] Bhikkhus, it is said that there the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Fully Awakened One, recited the Pātimokkha among the Saṅgha of bhikkhus thus: Patient endurance (khantī paramaṃ tapo titikkhā) is the supreme austerity; Nibbāna (nibbāna) is supreme, say the Buddhas. For one who injures another is no true renunciant, nor is one who oppresses another an ascetic. Not to do any evil, to accomplish the wholesome, to purify one's own mind (citta) — this is the teaching of the Buddhas. Not disparaging, not injuring, restraint in accordance with the Pātimokkha, moderation in food, a secluded lodging, and devotion to the higher mind (adhicitta) — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
