[78] Then the Blessed One, having stayed at Nāḷandā for as long as he pleased, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come, Ānanda, let us go to Pāṭaligāma." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, arrived at Pāṭaligāma.
The lay followers (upāsakā) of Pāṭaligāma heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has arrived at Pāṭaligāma." Then the lay followers of Pāṭaligāma approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the lay followers of Pāṭaligāma said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One consent to accept our rest-house." The Blessed One consented by silence.
Then the lay followers of Pāṭaligāma, knowing the Blessed One's consent, rose from their seats, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping him on their right, and went to the rest-house. Having gone there, they spread the rest-house with coverings so that it was spread throughout, prepared seats, set up a water-pot, and raised an oil lamp. Then they approached the Blessed One once more; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side. Standing to one side, the lay followers of Pāṭaligāma said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the rest-house has been spread with coverings throughout, seats have been prepared, a water-pot has been set up, and an oil lamp has been raised. May the Blessed One now do as he deems timely."
Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, went together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus to the rest-house. Having gone there and washed his feet, he entered the rest-house and sat down leaning against the central pillar, facing east. The Saṅgha of bhikkhus too, having washed their feet, entered the rest-house and sat down leaning against the western wall, facing east, with the Blessed One before them. And the lay followers of Pāṭaligāma, having washed their feet, entered the rest-house and sat down leaning against the eastern wall, facing west, with the Blessed One before them.
