[1] Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling among the Mallas, at a market town of the Mallas named Anupiya. Then in the morning the Blessed One, having dressed and taken his bowl and robe, entered Anupiya for alms. Then it occurred to the Blessed One: "It is still too early to walk for alms in Anupiya. Suppose I were to approach the park of the wanderer (paribbājaka) of the Bhaggava clan, to visit the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan." Then the Blessed One approached the park of the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan and the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan himself.
Then the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan said this to the Blessed One: "Let the Blessed One come, venerable sir! Welcome to the Blessed One, venerable sir! It is long, venerable sir, since the Blessed One found occasion to come here. May the Blessed One be seated, venerable sir; this seat has been prepared." The Blessed One sat down on the prepared seat, and the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan, taking a certain low seat, sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, some days past, Sunakkhatta the son of the Licchavis came to me, and having come, said this to me: 'Bhaggava, I have now renounced the Blessed One; I no longer dwell dedicated to the Blessed One.' Venerable sir, is that just as Sunakkhatta the son of the Licchavis said?"
"It is just as Sunakkhatta the son of the Licchavis said, Bhaggava. Some days past, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the son of the Licchavis came to me, and having come, paid homage to me and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the son of the Licchavis said this to me: 'Venerable sir, I now renounce the Blessed One; venerable sir, I shall no longer dwell dedicated to the Blessed One.' When this was said, Bhaggava, I said this to Sunakkhatta the son of the Licchavis: 'But, Sunakkhatta, did I ever say to you: "Come, Sunakkhatta, dwell dedicated to me"?'
'No indeed, venerable sir.'
'Or then, did you say this to me: "Venerable sir, I shall dwell dedicated to the Blessed One"?'
'No indeed, venerable sir.'
'So it seems, Sunakkhatta, that neither did I say to you, "Come, Sunakkhatta, dwell dedicated to me," nor did you say to me, "Venerable sir, I shall dwell dedicated to the Blessed One." That being so, foolish man, who are you, and whom do you renounce? See, foolish man, how great is this fault of yours.'"
