[2] "'But, venerable sir, the Blessed One never performs for me any demonstration of psychic power (iddhipāṭihāriya) that surpasses the human state (uttarimanussadhamma).'
'But, Sunakkhatta, did I ever say to you thus: "Come, Sunakkhatta, live dedicated to me, and I will perform for you a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state"?'
'No indeed, venerable sir.'
'Or did you ever say to me thus: "Venerable sir, I will live dedicated to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One will perform for me a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state"?'
'No indeed, venerable sir.'
'So it seems, Sunakkhatta, that I did not say to you: "Come, Sunakkhatta, live dedicated to me, and I will perform for you a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state"; nor did you say to me: "Venerable sir, I will live dedicated to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One will perform for me a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state." That being so, foolish man (moghapurisa), being who, whom do you disavow? What do you think, Sunakkhatta? Whether a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state is performed, or whether a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state is not performed, does the Dhamma taught by me, for the purpose for which it was taught, lead the one who practices in accordance with it to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha)?'
'Venerable sir, whether a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state is performed, or whether a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state is not performed, the Dhamma taught by the Blessed One, for the purpose for which it was taught, leads the one who practices in accordance with it to the complete destruction of suffering.'
'So it seems, Sunakkhatta, that whether a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state is performed, or whether a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state is not performed, the Dhamma taught by me, for the purpose for which it was taught, leads the one who practices in accordance with it to the complete destruction of suffering. That being so, Sunakkhatta, what purpose would the performance of a demonstration of psychic power that surpasses the human state serve? See, foolish man, how far you have gone astray in this!'"
