[113] Cunda, I do not teach the Dhamma to you only for the restraining of the taints (āsava) pertaining to the present life; nor, Cunda, do I teach the Dhamma only for the warding off of the taints pertaining to lives to come. Rather, Cunda, I teach the Dhamma both for the restraining of the taints pertaining to the present life and for the warding off of the taints pertaining to lives to come.
Therefore, Cunda, the robe that has been allowed by me to you suffices for you only for warding off cold, for warding off heat, for warding off the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and creeping things, and only for the purpose of covering the parts that arouse shame.
The almsfood that has been allowed by me to you suffices for you only for the maintenance and sustenance of this body, for the allaying of affliction, and for the support of the holy life, with the reflection: "Thus shall I destroy the old feeling (vedanā) and shall not arouse a new feeling; and there shall be for me continuance of life, blamelessness, and a dwelling at ease."
The lodging that has been allowed by me to you suffices for you only for warding off cold, for warding off heat, for warding off the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and creeping things, and only for dispelling the perils of the seasons and for the purpose of delighting in seclusion.
The requisite of medicines for the support of the sick that has been allowed by me to you suffices for you only for warding off arisen feelings of illness and for the utmost freedom from affliction.
