[128] Cunda, it is for the abandoning and transcending of these standpoints of views (diṭṭhinissaya) connected with the past (pubbanta) and of these standpoints of views connected with the future (aparanta) that the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) have thus been taught and laid down by me. What four? Here, Cunda, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. Regarding feelings (vedanā) … Regarding the mind (citta) … He dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. Cunda, it is for the abandoning and transcending of these standpoints of views connected with the past and of these standpoints of views connected with the future that these four establishments of mindfulness have thus been taught and laid down by me.
