[142] Bhikkhus, in whatever former birth, former existence, former abode the Tathāgata, being then a human being, was a speaker of speech connected with the good and connected with the Dhamma, instructed many people, and was a bringer of welfare and happiness to living beings, an offerer of the Dhamma (dhammayāgī) — because of having performed, accumulated, and amassed that kamma, … Passing away from there and coming back to this state of being, he obtains these two marks of a Great Man: he has high-set ankles (ussaṅkhapāda), and his body-hairs turn upward at the tips (uddhaggaloma). Endowed with those marks, if he dwells in the home he becomes a king, a wheel-turning monarch … Being a king, what does he obtain? He is the foremost, the best, the preeminent, the highest, and the most excellent of those who enjoy sensual pleasures. Being a king, this is what he obtains. … Being a Buddha, what does he obtain? He is the foremost, the best, the preeminent, the highest, and the most excellent of all beings. Being a Buddha, this is what he obtains. The Blessed One spoke this matter.
