[17] "Bhaggava, though I speak thus and declare thus, certain ascetics and brahmins misrepresent me with what is untrue, hollow, false, and contrary to fact, saying: 'The ascetic Gotama is distorted, and so are the bhikkhus; for the ascetic Gotama says: "At the time when one enters and dwells in the beautiful liberation (subha vimokkha), at that time one clearly comprehends everything as only foul (asubha)."'
But, Bhaggava, I do not speak thus: 'At the time when one enters and dwells in the beautiful liberation, at that time one clearly comprehends everything as only foul.' Rather, Bhaggava, I speak thus: 'At the time when one enters and dwells in the beautiful liberation, at that time one clearly comprehends only the beautiful.'"
"It is they who are distorted — those who regard the Blessed One and the bhikkhus as distorted. Venerable sir, I have such confidence in the Blessed One: the Blessed One is able to teach me the Dhamma in such a way that I might enter and dwell in the beautiful liberation."
"It is hard, Bhaggava, for you — holding another view, accepting another teaching, approving of another — to enter and dwell in the beautiful liberation apart from application and apart from a teacher's guidance. Come then, Bhaggava, carefully preserve this confidence that you have in me."
"If, venerable sir, it is hard for me — holding another view, accepting another teaching, approving of another — to enter and dwell in the beautiful liberation apart from application and apart from a teacher's guidance, then I shall carefully preserve this confidence that I have in the Blessed One."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Elated, the wanderer of the Bhaggava clan delighted in the words of the Blessed One.
The Pāṭika Sutta, the first, is concluded.
