[18] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, on the mountain Gijjhakūṭa. Now on that occasion the wanderer (paribbājaka) Nigrodha was residing in the wanderers' park of the lady Udumbarikā together with a large assembly of wanderers, numbering some three thousand wanderers. Then the householder Sandhāna departed from Rājagaha in the middle of the day to see the Blessed One. Then it occurred to the householder Sandhāna: "It is not the right time just now to see the Blessed One; the Blessed One is in seclusion. Nor is it a fitting occasion to see the bhikkhus worthy of esteem (manobhāvanīya); the esteemed bhikkhus are in seclusion. Suppose, then, I were to approach the wanderers' park of the lady Udumbarikā, to where the wanderer Nigrodha is." Then the householder Sandhāna approached the wanderers' park of the lady Udumbarikā, to where the wanderer Nigrodha was.
