[19] Now at that time, the wanderer Nigrodha was seated with a large assembly of wanderers, which was making an uproar with loud voices and great noise, engaged in various kinds of low talk (tiracchānakathā), that is to say: talk of kings, talk of thieves, talk of great ministers, talk of armies, talk of perils, talk of battles, talk of food, talk of drink, talk of clothing, talk of beds, talk of garlands, talk of scents, talk of relatives, talk of vehicles, talk of villages, talk of towns, talk of districts, talk of cities, talk of women, talk of men, talk of drinking liquor, talk of streets, talk of wells, talk of those departed, miscellaneous talk, speculation about the world, speculation about the ocean, and talk of existence thus and so.
The wanderer Nigrodha saw the householder Sandhāna coming while still far off; having seen him, he quieted his own assembly: "Let the honorable sirs be quiet; do not make a sound, sirs. This disciple of the ascetic Gotama is coming — the householder Sandhāna. Of however many white-clothed householder disciples of the ascetic Gotama dwell in Rājagaha, this householder Sandhāna is one of them. Those venerable ones love quiet and speak in praise of quiet. Perhaps, knowing this assembly to be quiet, he may see fit to approach." When this was said, those wanderers fell silent.
