[199] "Householder's son, in five ways should a son minister to his mother and father as the eastern quarter, thinking: 'Having been supported by them, I will support them in return; I will perform their duties for them; I will maintain the family lineage; I will undertake the inheritance; and further, when they have departed and passed away, I will offer the dedicatory gift (dakkhiṇā) on their behalf.'
"Householder's son, when the mother and father as the eastern quarter have been ministered to by the son in these five ways, they show compassion to the son in five ways: they restrain him from evil; they establish him in the good; they have him trained in a craft; they join him with a suitable wife; and in due time they hand over the inheritance to him.
"Householder's son, when the mother and father as the eastern quarter have been ministered to by the son in these five ways, they show compassion to the son in these five ways. Thus for him this eastern quarter is covered, made secure and free from peril."
