[205] Mother and father are the eastern direction (disā pubbā);
teachers are the southern direction;
wife and children are the western direction;
and friends and companions the northern;
bondservants and workers are below;
above are ascetics and brahmins:
these directions should he revere—
a householder capable in his family.
The wise one accomplished in virtue,
gentle and quick-witted,
of humble bearing, not obstinate—
such a one gains fame.
The energetic one, not lazy,
who does not waver in adversities,
of unbroken conduct, intelligent—
such a one gains fame.
The one who draws others together, a maker of friends,
responsive to entreaty, rid of stinginess,
a leader, a trainer, a conciliator—
such a one gains fame.
Giving, and endearing speech,
and beneficent conduct here,
and impartiality in all things,
in each case as is fitting—
these means of drawing others together (saṅgaha) in the world
are like the linchpin of a moving chariot.
And if these means of drawing together did not exist,
neither would a mother receive
honor or veneration on account of her child,
nor a father on account of his child.
And since the wise regard rightly
these means of drawing together,
therefore they attain to greatness
and they are praised.
