[211] From here, that is the southern quarter—
so people point it out—
the quarter which is watched over
by a great king, glorious,
overlord of the kumbhaṇḍas,
Virūḷha by name;
delighting in dance and song,
he is honored by the kumbhaṇḍas.
Many too are his sons,
of a single name, so I have heard:
eighty and ten and one,
named Inda, of great might.
And they too, having seen the Awakened One,
the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun,
pay homage to him from afar—
the great one, free of trepidation (vītasārada):
"Homage to you, thoroughbred among men!
Homage to you, supreme among men!
With skill you look on;
even non-humans venerate you.
This we have heard again and again;
therefore we speak thus:
'Do you venerate Gotama the Victor (jina)?'
'We venerate Gotama the Victor;
the one accomplished in true knowledge and conduct (vijjācaraṇasampanna)—
we venerate Gotama the Buddha.'"
And where the sun goes down—
Ādicca, the great orb—
with whose setting
the day too comes to an end,
and when the sun has gone down,
it is called "night" (saṃvarī)—
there too is a deep lake,
an ocean of flowing waters;
thus do they know it there:
"an ocean of flowing waters."
