[210] "From here that is the eastern quarter" —
so do the people declare it.
That quarter is guarded
by a great king of glory,
overlord of the gandhabbas,
Dhataraṭṭha by name;
honored by the gandhabbas,
he delights in dance and song.
Many too are his sons,
of a single name — so I have heard —
eighty and ten and one,
named Inda, of great strength.
And they too, having seen the Awakened One,
the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun,
pay homage to him even from afar,
the great one, free from timidity:
"Homage to you, O thoroughbred of men!
Homage to you, O supreme among men!
With skill you survey [all beings];
even non-humans revere you."
This we have heard time and again;
therefore do we speak thus:
"Do you revere the Victor (jina) Gotama?" —
"We revere the Victor Gotama;
accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct,
we revere Gotama, the Awakened One."
That quarter whither, so it is said, the departed (petā) go —
folk who were slanderers and backbiters,
killers of living beings, cruel men,
thieves and cheats —
