[435] What seven dhammas should be completely understood? The seven stations of consciousness (viññāṇaṭṭhiti). Friends, there are beings diverse in body and diverse in perception (saññā), such as human beings, some gods, and some beings in states of deprivation (vinipātika). This is the first station of consciousness.
Friends, there are beings diverse in body and unified in perception, such as the gods of Brahmā's retinue (brahmakāyikā), generated by the first [jhāna]. This is the second station of consciousness.
Friends, there are beings unified in body and diverse in perception, such as the gods of Streaming Radiance (Ābhassara). This is the third station of consciousness.
Friends, there are beings unified in body and unified in perception, such as the gods of Refulgent Glory (Subhakiṇha). This is the fourth station of consciousness.
Friends, there are beings who, with the complete transcending of perceptions of form, with the passing away of perceptions of impingement, with non-attention to perceptions of diversity, [aware that] "space is infinite," have arrived at the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana). This is the fifth station of consciousness.
Friends, there are beings who, having completely transcended the base of the infinity of space, [aware that] "consciousness is infinite," have arrived at the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana). This is the sixth station of consciousness.
Friends, there are beings who, having completely transcended the base of the infinity of consciousness, [aware that] "there is nothing at all," have arrived at the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana). This is the seventh station of consciousness.
These are the seven dhammas that should be completely understood.
