[458] Which nine things should be abandoned? Nine things rooted in craving (taṇhā): in dependence on craving, there is searching (pariyesanā); in dependence on searching, gain (lābha); in dependence on gain, appraisal (vinicchaya); in dependence on appraisal, desire and lust (chandarāga); in dependence on desire and lust, attachment (ajjhosāna); in dependence on attachment, possessiveness (pariggaha); in dependence on possessiveness, stinginess (macchariya); in dependence on stinginess, safeguarding (ārakkha); and on account of safeguarding, many evil, unwholesome things come to pass: the taking up of sticks, the taking up of weapons, quarrels, contention, disputes, insolent talk of "you! you!", divisive speech, and false speech. These nine things should be abandoned.
