[47] Bhikkhus, among humans with a lifespan of ten years there will be an "interval of swords" (satthantarakappa) lasting seven days. They will perceive one another as beasts. Sharp swords will appear in their hands, and with those sharp swords, thinking "This is a beast!" they will deprive one another of life. Then, bhikkhus, some of those beings will think thus: "Let us not kill anyone, and let no one kill us! What if we were to enter a thicket of grass, a thicket of forest, a thicket of trees, an inaccessible river region, or rugged mountains, and keep ourselves alive on forest roots and fruits?" And they will enter a thicket of grass, a thicket of forest, a thicket of trees, an inaccessible river region, or rugged mountains, and for seven days keep themselves alive on forest roots and fruits. At the end of those seven days, having come out from the thicket of grass, the thicket of forest, the thicket of trees, the inaccessible river region, and the rugged mountains, they will embrace one another and, in the assemblies, they will sing and console one another: "How good to see you, dear being — you are alive! How good to see you, dear being — you are alive!" Then, bhikkhus, those beings will think thus: "It is because of our undertaking unskillful dhammas that we have come to such an extensive destruction of our relatives. What if we were to do what is skillful? What skillful thing should we do? What if we were to abstain from the destruction of life? Having undertaken this skillful dhamma, let us practice accordingly." They will abstain from the destruction of life; having undertaken this skillful dhamma, they will practice accordingly. Because of their undertaking skillful dhammas, they will grow in lifespan and grow in beauty. As they grow in lifespan and grow in beauty, the children of humans with a lifespan of ten years will have a lifespan of twenty years. Then, bhikkhus, those beings will think thus: "It is because of our undertaking skillful dhammas that we are growing in lifespan and growing in beauty. What if we were to do what is skillful to a still greater degree? What skillful thing should we do? What if we were to abstain from taking what is not given, abstain from sexual misconduct, abstain from false speech, abstain from divisive speech, abstain from harsh speech, abstain from idle chatter; abandon covetousness, abandon ill will, abandon wrong view; abandon three things — illicit lust, inordinate greed, and wrong practice? What if we were to be dutiful to our mothers, dutiful to our fathers, respectful toward ascetics, respectful toward brahmins, and honor the elders of the family? Having undertaken this skillful dhamma, let us practice accordingly." They will be dutiful to their mothers, dutiful to their fathers, respectful toward ascetics, respectful toward brahmins, and honor the elders of the family; having undertaken this skillful dhamma, they will practice accordingly. Because of their undertaking skillful dhammas, they will grow in lifespan and grow in beauty. As they grow in lifespan and grow in beauty, the children of humans with a lifespan of twenty years will have a lifespan of forty years. The children of humans with a lifespan of forty years will have a lifespan of eighty years. The children of humans with a lifespan of eighty years will have a lifespan of one hundred and sixty years. The children of humans with a lifespan of one hundred and sixty years will have a lifespan of three hundred and twenty years. The children of humans with a lifespan of three hundred and twenty years will have a lifespan of six hundred and forty years. The children of humans with a lifespan of six hundred and forty years will have a lifespan of two thousand years. The children of humans with a lifespan of two thousand years will have a lifespan of four thousand years. The children of humans with a lifespan of four thousand years will have a lifespan of eight thousand years. The children of humans with a lifespan of eight thousand years will have a lifespan of twenty thousand years. The children of humans with a lifespan of twenty thousand years will have a lifespan of forty thousand years. The children of humans with a lifespan of forty thousand years will have a lifespan of eighty thousand years.
