[62] Then, Vāseṭṭha, a certain being of a greedy nature, while guarding his own share, took another share that had not been given and ate it. They seized him, and having seized him, they said this: 'Good being, you have indeed done a wicked deed, in that while guarding your own share you took another share that was not given and ate it. Good being, do not do such a thing again.' 'Yes, good sirs,' Vāseṭṭha, that being replied to those beings. But for a second time, Vāseṭṭha, that being … For a third time, Vāseṭṭha, that being, while guarding his own share, took another share that had not been given and ate it. They seized him, and having seized him, they said this: 'Good being, you have indeed done a wicked deed, in that while guarding your own share you took another share that was not given and ate it. Good being, do not do such a thing ever again.' Some struck him with the hand, some struck him with a clod of earth, some struck him with a stick. From that time onward, Vāseṭṭha, the taking of what is not given (adinnādāna) was found, blame was found, false speech (musāvāda) was found, the taking up of rods (daṇḍādāna) was found.
Then, Vāseṭṭha, the eminent beings assembled; having assembled, they lamented: 'Alas, good sirs, wicked things have appeared among beings, in that the taking of what is not given will be found, blame will be found, false speech will be found, the taking up of rods will be found. What if we were to appoint one being who would rightly reprove one who deserves reproof, rightly censure one who deserves censure, and rightly banish one who deserves banishment? And we shall grant him a share of the rice (sāli).' Then, Vāseṭṭha, those beings approached that being among them who was more handsome, more comely, more inspiring, and of greater authority, and said this: 'Come, good being; rightly reprove one who deserves reproof, rightly censure one who deserves censure, rightly banish one who deserves banishment; and we shall grant you a share of the rice.' 'Yes, good sirs,' Vāseṭṭha; that being, having assented to those beings, rightly reproved one who deserved reproof, rightly censured one who deserved censure, and rightly banished one who deserved banishment. And they granted him a share of the rice.
