[63] "'Agreed upon by the great populace (mahājanasammata)'—thus indeed, Vāseṭṭha, 'Mahāsammata' arose as the first term. 'Lord of the fields (khettānaṃ adhipati)'—thus indeed, Vāseṭṭha, 'khattiya' arose as the second term. 'He gladdens others by righteousness (dhammena paresaṃ rañjeti)'—thus indeed, Vāseṭṭha, 'rājā' arose as the third term. Thus indeed, Vāseṭṭha, was the origination of this circle of khattiyas by way of these ancient, primordial terms—for those very beings, not for others; for those like themselves, not for those unlike; by righteousness (dhamma) alone, not otherwise than by righteousness. For righteousness, Vāseṭṭha, is the best thing for this people, both in the visible life and in the life to come."
